U-Pass (Bus Pass) Program

What is the U-Pass?

The Universal Bus Pass (U-Pass) program is a valuable service of the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) that provides unlimited access to public transit in Greater Victoria for most Camosun students. The program was established in 1999 by referendum of students and is one of the most used programs of the CCSS.

U-Pass for Enrolled Students

Fall 2023 – Use Student Card or Umo app:

Umo is required for new activations as of Nov 1st. Existing activated Student ID cards continue to work for students who have yet to setup the Umo app nor Umo card, but will deactivate once Umo has been setup.
See the 2024 directions below for setting up Umo.

Starting 2024 – Use Umo app:

In January 2024, the U-Pass will shift from the student card to using the new BC Transit Umo app or Umo card. To get the Umo activation code:

Download the Umo app. If the app doesn’t appear in the list of apps then you may be using a Apple or Google ID associated with another country and need to use the Umo card instead.
Sign into myCamosun+ and then select “Manage your U-Pass” to obtain the code. If may be better to do this step on a computer and then enter the code into the app.
Click on Menu() > “Redeem Benefit”.
Select “Change Agency” > Select “VIC – Victoria Regional Transit” > Enter the code from myCamosun+.
Scan the “Validation Code” when you get on the bus.

Starting 2024 – Use Umo card:

Umo card is available as an option instead of the Umo app. It’s easiest to select the card when first using the Umo activation code.

Pickup a new Umo card at the library.
Go to the Umo website (ca.umopass.com).
Select “Create Account” > “Register Card”.
If you’ve already activate the code for the app then you’ll need to contact Umo Customer Service to reassign the code from the app to the card.
Only one form of the U-Pass (student card or UMO app) can be active at a time.

Who is eligible?

All students who are taking any classes at Camosun, and are a member of the CCSS, are automatically assessed the U-Pass fee for each month of enrollment. The charges appear on your Camosun fee statement. This compulsory program as required by BC Transit to offer the program and makes transportation to Camosun affordable, eases parking and traffic congestion, and reduces demand to pave more of our campus for parking lots. All students are required to participate in the program to achieve a very low prices of 25% of the actual cost!

U-Pass for Non-Enrolled Students

Fall 2023 – Use Student Card

Use existing activated Student ID card.

Starting 2024 – Use Umo app:

Go to the library at either campus and pay non-enrolled U-Pass fee.
Download the Umo app. If the app doesn’t appear in the list of apps then you may be using a Apple or Google ID associated with another country and need to use the Umo card instead.
Sign into myCamosun+ and then select “Manage your U-Pass” to obtain the code. If may be better to do this step on a computer and then enter the code into the app. It may take 15 minutes for the code to appear in myCamosun+.
Click on Menu() > “Redeem Benefit”.
Select “Change Agency” > Select “VIC – Victoria Regional Transit” > Enter the code from myCamosun+.
Scan the “Validation Code” when you get on the bus.

Who is eligible?

The U-Pass for Non-Enrolled Students is available to most students who were enrolled in the previous semester but are taking the semester off. We are pleased to be able to continue the U-Pass for Non-Enrolled Students in the Fall 2023 semester starting August 25th, 2023.

Student Taking 7 Week Summer Classes

If taking 7 week summer classes and purchasing the 14 week Non-Enrollment U-Pass, select reason #2 to submit your opt-out and then upload a photo of your receipt.

Can I Opt-Out?

The Camosun College Student Society and BC Transit have agreed to allow students to opt out of the U-Pass only if they meet one of the four criteria listed on the U-Pass opt out form below. This opt out must be processed within 30 days of the start of a semester/term.

We are regretfully unable to opt-out for online students from U-Pass except for the limited reasons outlined below. At Camosun, we have long had online instruction, but such instruction has never been treated differently in terms of tuition or fees for students residing in the Victoria area. In these unreal times it remains important to be consistent in practice to ensure we are fair to all students and to BC Transit who has supported our members with affordable transportation for over 20 years. We’ve always encouraged students to use the U-Pass for transportation above and beyond going to campus. Whether your hanging out with friends or on a date, attending work, or starting/returning from travel, consider taking the bus!

Non-Enrolled U-Pass for Summer

If taking 7 week summer classes and purchasing the 14 week Non-Enrollment U-Pass, select reason #2 to submit your opt-out and then upload a photo of your receipt.

Opt Out Criteria

Students who are taking any credit course(s) at Camosun are automatically assessed the U-Pass fee. The Camosun College Student Society and BC Transit have agreed to allow students to opt out of the U-Pass only if they meet one of the four criteria listed below. This opt out must be processed within 30 days of the start of a semester/term.

#1: Students has a physical disability that precludes travel by regular BC Transit fixed route or the Handydart service:

Requires Dr. Certificate confirming physical disability that precludes travel by regular BC Transit fixed route or the Handydart service.

#2: Students who already hold an annual BC Bus Pass, a Pro pass, or U-Pass (including Non-Enrolled U-Pass):

Requires a photocopy of the bus pass.
Students who are enrolled at UVic must opt out of the U-Pass at UVic in Fall/Winter.
Students who have a Bus Pass provided to BC Transit employees or their family members are not allowed to opt-out of the U-Pass. This was stipulated by BC Transit.

#3: Students on a co-op work term located outside the Capital Regional District (includes Victoria and surrounding areas):

This must be processed by the Co-op office.

#4: Students living outside the Capital Regional District (includes Victoria and surrounding areas)
AND is either studying entirely via distance education or takes only one course (max. 4 hrs per week):

Requires proof of registration: list of classes from Camlink or myCamosun
Requires proof of residency outside the Capital Regional District: Two support documents with address:
Current photo ID and one of the following issued within the past 2 months: utility bill, government mail, recent plane ticket, written confirmation of current residency from Camosun International.

Once a student has submitted an opt out they will receive a confirmation email. When the opt out has been approved, they will receive a second email. If the confirmation is not received, it is the student's responsibility to contact the Student Society office within the 30-day opt out period.
