Student Voices: Old Growth

Join CCSS Sustainability Director, Savannah Baratt, and CCSS Women’s Director, Amanda Garner, as they show you how you can use your voice (literally!) to urge the Premiere to implement the recommendations of the Old Growth Strategic Review and bring an immediate end to all old growth logging in British Columbia, especially within the Watershed of Fairy Creek.  In this video, Savannah and Amanda will walk you through a demonstration and script that you can use to communicate your concerns to your elected officials.

Act Now

As students, your collective voice matters and can make an impact.  We have provided phone and email/letter scripts that you can use to communicate with Premiere, John Horgan, and Minister of Forest, Katrine Conroy.  Take action by sending them a message by April 6.

Hello, my name is _(first name)_.

As a student, I’m calling to urge premier John Horgan to immediately implement the recommendations of the Old Growth Strategic Review and bring an immediate end to all old growth logging in British Columbia, especially within the Watershed of Fairy Creek. Fairy Creek is culturally and ecologically important as well as one of the last intact watersheds on Vancouver

Island. Due to this, I want to express my support for the actions of the old growth forest activists who are currently seeking to protect this land from immediate clearcutting. These activists are practicing their rights of peaceful protest in order to protect Fairy Creek and the surrounding biodiversity of this old-growth ecosystem.

It is shocking that the current NDP government is allowing deforestation to continue in British Columbia when we are in the middle of a climate and ecological emergency. We as students are calling on the Premier to immediately end the outdated and dangerous practice of clearcutting old-growth forests. I support a stable transition to a sustainable economy, however, old growth forest is not renewable and should be the primary concern of land management plans now and in the future.

Thank you for your time.
